New Year's Resolutions

It is officially December which means New Years is right around the corner! It's got me thinking that new goals don't just apply to me but also my dog so I came up with a list of a few things that you can do for your pup (and yourself).

#1) Measure you pups food

After awhile I believe we as pet owners we start to eyeball the amount to give our dogs which in reality can lead to overfeeding which in turn is weight gain. Be sure to follow the guidelines on the back of your pets food bag.

#2) Feed an age appropriate diet

Growing pups have specific nutritional requirements that help them grow strong. Same with senior pets they have lower energy - so finding an appropriate diet designed for your pups specific needs will help your pet stay in optimal health.

#3) Try a new activity with your pet

There are so many different things to do with your pet, from doga, kayaking, hiking to camping. There is an endless variety! Try something new! It's great exercise for you and your dog.

#4) Add more playtime into your routine

It's so much fun for both of you to switch things up and keep it interesting! Plus, like I said above, it's great exercise for both of you!

#5) Make a Vet appointment

Alright, this may not be your pets favorite but it's in their favor. Yearly check ups help to catch any early signs of sickness and help keep your pet at it's healthiest.

#6) Brush/groom your pet

This is great for your pet because it helps eliminate the extra fur/hair in their coat. It helps you because that's less hair on your furniture and clothes. But most importantly it's a great bonding experience for the both of you.

#7) Good oral hygiene

Brushing your dogs teeth on a regular basis helps keep tartar and plaque buildup at bay. Be sure to use toothpaste specifically for your pet.

#8) Teach your dog new tricks

A dog is never too old to learn a new trick. Even just practicing ones they already know helps keep those neurons firing. Anything that has to make a dog think is a great way to keep your pet "young".

#9) Update your pets ID info

A lot can happen in a year: people move and get new phone numbers which people can forget to update until their pet is lost. Make sure all their information is up to date in case your furry friend decides to take a solo trip.

#10) Consider Fostering

Maybe you don't have any experience in owning a dog and are considering it. What may be a great idea for you to try is foster, especially if you want to test the waters of pet ownership. A lot of shelters are in need of fosters to help temporarily with taking care of a dog. It's an extremely rewarding experience. And who knows, their forever home may end up being with you.
