National Poison Awareness Month
This entire month of March us to raise awareness and help prevent our pets from poisoning so we thought we'd share some information on the topic.
Five Common Toxins That Can Poison Your Pet
1) Human Medication - it contains acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSADIS (Advil) which can cause serious harm to dogs.
2) Human Foods - many of our pets are presented with opportunities in which they help themselves to our food. Items like chocolate (dark chocolate in the worst because it contains high amounts of theobromine which is a relative to caffeine that can be deadly), Xylitol (found in gums, candies, etc. Read about it here), raisins and grapes to name a few.
3) Insecticides - a large amount of calls to the Pet Poison Helpline were because dogs ate insecticides in the form of sprays, granules, insect bait stations and more. Watch out for an ingredient called: Organophosphates.
4) Rodenticides - these contain various ingredients that are poisonous to our pets. Depending on the type ingested the results can range from moderate to severe: uncontrolled bleeding, swelling of the brain, kidney failure, seizures or death.
5) Dietary supplements/vitamins - items such as iron, vitamin-D and alpha-lipoic acid can be highly toxic in overdose situations. Not to mention Xylitol can be found in sugar free multi-vitamins.
If you think your pet ingested something harmful please call your veterinary or the pet poison helpline at 1-800-213-6680.
