Pet Dental Awareness Month
February is a month for awareness on brushing your dogs teeth. Why should you brush your dogs teeth you ask? Here's why....
Periodontal/Gum disease
This is when food particles and bacteria form along the gum line and form soft deposits, also known as plaque. Overtime this turns into hard tartar and if that isn't removed it will inflame your dogs gums. As inflammation occurs it separates your dogs teeth from the gums which forms pockets for bacteria to grow. At this point your pup can experience pain, loose a tooth, form abscesses in your dogs mouth which form even more bacteria that can get into the bloodstream to the kidneys, liver, heart or brain. YIKES!
How You Can Help...
1) Brush your dogs teeth on a weekly basis
2) Have plenty of chews available.. the best ones are raw marrow bones and antlers
MYTH:
Giving your dog a "dental treat" may help freshen the dogs breath but if it's gone in two seconds it's really not helping to remove the build up off their teeth. The longer the chew can last and the more your dog can really gnaw and chew on it the better; that's why I suggest raw marrow bones and antlers because they're the longest lasting. Same thing applies to kibble dog food.... your dog doesn't chew on it long enough to have an effect.
