Spay/Neuter Facts
February is spay and neuter awareness month!
Here are 6 facts:
1) One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years
2) Failure to spay or neuter pets results in hundreds of thousands of offspring being euthanized annually - each day in the United States, animal shelters are forced to destroy 30,000 dogs and cats
3) Every purchase from a pet store only encourages the store and puppy mill to produce more dogs which in turn is condemning that puppy's mother to a life of continuous mistreatment and abuse.
4) Fixing your pet can reduce some of the most common cancers making it likelier for your pet to live a longer and healthier life
5) It's impossible to determine how many stray pets in the U.S. there are but estimates say there is 70 million homeless cats alone!
6) The cost to spay/neuter a pet is less than the average cost of a puppy or kitten in one year
So what exactly does it mean to spay or neuter?
Spaying refers to the removal of the reproductive organs of female dogs and cats, while neutering is the removal of the testicles in male dogs and cats. The surgeries are always performed while the animal is under anesthesia.
