Halloween Pet Safety Tips
Halloween is upon us! Can you believe it's already October? We put together a few tips to help keep your pet safe on all Hallows Eve.
1) Trick or Treat Candy is NOT for pets
There are a lot of candies that have chocolate which we all know is poisonous to dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, rapid heart beat and sometimes even seizures. Let's not forget about xylitol either (an artificial sweetener that is extremely toxic to dogs).
2) Keep your pets indoors
Unfortunately there are a lot of mean pranksters out there that may injure, steal, tease and possibly even kill pets on Halloween. Keeping them indoors helps prevent against animal cruelty.
3) Keep pets blocked off from the door
Lets face it, your doorbell will be constantly ringing and kids in costumes will be yelling for their candy. To our territorial companions it may cause them to growl and have anxiety. Not to mention it'll give your pet an opportunity to dart outside.
4) Bring your outdoor cats in several days before and after Halloween
Sadly black cats are at a higher risk for pranks. In fact a lot of shelters wont adopt out black cats during the month of October as a precaution.
5) Keep pumpkins and corn out of reach
They aren't toxic, however, if eaten in large quantities it can cause an upset tummy as well as intestinal blockage.
6) Also on the topic of pumpkins your pet has the risk of burning themselves as well as knocking it over which could start a fire.
7) Don't dress up your pet if they don't like it.
It could stress them out even more if they don't like costumes. Should you dress your pet up just make sure they can still move, hear, breathe and bark/meow. If your pet isn't the costume kind festive bandanas are a great alternate!
8) ID's!
Make sure your pet is properly tagged should they escape and become lost. Also look and see if any information needs updating - that includes a microchip if your pet has one of those too!
Overall, we hope everyone has a safe and Yappy Howl-een!!
